Flathead Back Country Horseman Info Sheet

August 30&31,September 1st: Elkcalf Mountain and Puzzle Creek Trails #382, #251 (Middle Fork Area)

bullet Access: Take Hwy 2 to mile marker #195.7 and turn right on to the Skyland Creek Road, just west of Marias Pass. Follow this road for approximately 7 miles to Challenge cabin.  Turn right here and camp near the cabin
bullet Facilities: There is plenty of parking, a rustic toilet facility and water from the creek.
bullet Description: We will be packing in a crew from the Bob Marshal Foundation and also helping them with some of the initial clearing.  The trail that we will be packing them in on is trail # 382 starting where it takes off from the Skyland Road and going up until it intersects with Trail # 251 where they will set up camp.  Packing is about 4 miles each way with moderate elevation gain and good trail most of the way.  We could also use riders to help place some signs, do some trail marking and clearing on #382 as it follows the ridge North toward the Park and some good heads to engineer what needs to be done next year to fix some boggy spots on #251.  There are lots of trails in this area and we will need lots of help to get it all done.
bullet Trails: There are several trails in this area some are more difficult than others.  Please ask group leader for more information about a specific trail.
bullet Please note:  We will pack in BMF on Saturday, potluck on Saturday night and either work or ride on Sunday and pack out the BMF on Monday. We will need 4-5 packhorses and most clearing can be done with a chainsaw.
