July 12,13 &19,20: Pack in Smoke
Jumpers - Logan-Dirtyface Trail #62(South Fork
Area to Middle Fork Area)
Access:
To get to this project, take Hwy 2 going
toward Glacier Park.Turn off the
highway at Martin City and continue on
this road along the east side of Hungry
Horse reservoir for 36 miles.Take
the first main road to the left after
Betty Creek ranger station (apx. 1.5
miles, right after mile marker #35); this
will be Logan creek Rd. #1632. At the
first intersection of #1632 take a left
turn and then drive about 2 miles to the
trailhead and our camp.
Facilities:
There is good parking in a loop next to
the road, water can be carried from small
creek next to the road (about 50 feet)
there are no toilet facilities.
Description:The Logan Creek portion of the trail
goes through a burn that occurred in
1998. This trail has a gradual elevation
climb and is in fairly good shape
although it is not up to standards of a
class III trail. We will be packing in
and out the National Retired Smoke
Jumpers Association so that they can set
up camp and start clearing where we left
off last year and continue on down the
Dirtyface trail. This trail is one of the
few trails that will take you across the
divide between the Middle Fork and The
South Fork drainages.The Logan
creek side of the trail takes you quite
quickly from heavy timber to some quite
scenic sub alpine and alpine type terrain
with a beautiful waterfall.This
will be our 4th year working to open it
for stock and hiking travel.
Please
Note: The packing distance is
about 5 miles each way.We will
need about 6-7 pack animals, or more if
we can help with the Baptise Project. We may also at this time since we are in
the area be able to help pack for the
Baptise Project, which is located very
close to the Logan Trailhead.
