Some guidelines for writing letters to Congress:
· Address letters to Senators (Tester and Baucus) as "Dear Senator" and letters to Representatives (Rehberg) as "Dear Representative."
· Keep it simple (no more than one page). You can use three paragraphs as follows:
1. Say why you are writing and who you are. List your "credentials."
2. Provide more detail. Be factual not emotional. Provide specific rather than general information about how the topic affects you and others. If a certain bill is involved, cite the correct title or number whenever possible.
3. Close by requesting the action you want taken: a vote for or against a bill, or change in general policy, and thanking your Congressman for taking the time to read your letter.
· If you want a response, you must include your name and address, even when using email.
· The best letters are courteous, to the point, and include specific supporting examples.
· If possible, please keep a copy of your letter and any response you receive as others may be interested in seeing them if you are willing to share. You can also state you want your letter to be a matter of "Public Record" if you desire.
