Our Gallatin Valley Backcountry Horseman will be sponsoring its first Defensive
Horsemanship clinic on Saturday, May 21st at Shanango Station (Squaw Creek) to
begin at 9:30am and last all day.
This is a FREE clinic. It is not mandatory, but recommended that you bring your horse. This clinic is a requirement by the Forest Service for our members and friends who plan to volunteer their time on trail maintenance and be around stock. This is not for certification. There are pamphlets available for you to read and may be on hand at the general meeting or call Chick Hale @763-4105.

9:30 a.m. Overview--Tom Highberger: (All participants, no horses.)
Introduction to Forest Service use of stock; safe procedures, requirements, etc.
(20 min.)
9:50 Veterinary First Aid/Kit—Dave Schilz: (All participants without
horses, one demo horse for instructor) Overview of BBCH’s equine first aid kit
assembled by Bill Routen, DVM (30 min.) At end of session, participants are
divided into four groups.
10:20 a.m. Ten minute break to tack-up saddle horses.
10:30-12:00 and 12:45 p.m.-2:15 Round-robin, each group going to four
instruction stations for 45 minutes each. After everyone attends two sessions,
we’ll break for chow at 12:00. Sessions will resume at 12:45 and run until 2:15.
Mike Lorash--Ground work for improved safety; Safer trailer loading and
unloading. (45 min.)

Tom Highberger--Horse gear in the backcountry, fit and function,
haltering, saddling, mounting, dismounting. (45 min.)
Dave Schilz— Understanding the Horse as our partner; the Nature of this
beast, how to be safe on the ground, the horse as a social animal around other
horses, and safe handling of feet. (45 min.)
Dan Aadland--Carrying gear on saddle horse; rough terrain riding;
low-stress approach to obstacles. (horses needed)
12:00-12:45--Chow
12:45-2:15—Round-robin continues with participants attending two more
sessions.
2:30-4:30—Trail ride as application of skills.
