Founded in 1978 at Valier, Montana the "EAST SLOPE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMEN". Is a nonprofit volunteer organization with a three fold purpose; service to the backcountry, education of horsemen, and representation in land use planning and management.
We are very active in working with the
U.S. Forest Service building bridges, corrals, clearing trails and taking care of a multitude of other needed maintenance items within the Lewis and Clark National Forest, including the
Bob Marshall Wilderness and the
Scapegoat
Wilderness areas.
These wilderness areas along with the
Great Bear Wilderness form the
Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. We
also help maintain the Pondera County Public Park and National Forest Trailhead at Swift Dam, eighteen miles west of Dupuyer, Montana.
To perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in the roadless back country and to assist the various government agencies in maintenance and management of the resource and to educate, encourage, and solicit active participation by various members of the general public in the wise and sustaining use of horses and to educate responsible citizen involvement in local, state and national policy regarding management of roadless back country areas, commensurate with our heritage.
